Miami Vice Is Going Back to the ’80s

Some shows bring back memories. Miami Vice brings back an entire wardrobe.

Universal has announced that Miami Vice ’85 is now in production, releasing the first official images of Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs. The pair take over the detective roles made famous by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.

The title tells you where this is headed: back to the era that made Miami Vice a cultural phenomenon. The new film draws inspiration from the original show’s pilot and first season, with a story centered on the money, crime, and excess of mid-1980s Miami.

Behind the camera is Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1, working from a screenplay by Nightcrawler writer Dan Gilroy. The supporting cast includes Walton Goggins, John Leguizamo, Camila Morrone, and Danny Ramirez. The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters May 19, 2028.

For fans, the appeal goes beyond seeing Crockett and Tubbs again. Miami Vice made a crime show feel like a music video, a fashion statement, and a dangerous vacation all at once.

That’s the challenge for this version: capture the atmosphere that made the original unforgettable. The suits are a start. Now let’s see what they do with the soundtrack.
